How buying a gun in Omaha works

Nebraska still requires a handgun purchase certificate, or a Nebraska concealed handgun permit, to buy a handgun. The certificate is issued by the local police chief or county sheriff; in Omaha, the Omaha Police Department. A bill to repeal it failed in 2025. Rifles and shotguns need only ATF Form 4473 and the federal NICS check. Federal age rules apply: 21 for handguns from a dealer, 18 for long guns. There is no waiting period.

Carrying a gun in Douglas County

Since September 2, 2023, Nebraska has allowed permitless concealed carry for adults 21 and older who can legally own a handgun. LB 77 also overrode local gun ordinances, including Omaha's. The optional concealed handgun permit is issued by the Nebraska State Patrol. It is still useful because it replaces the handgun purchase certificate and is recognized in many other states. Posted private property and some public places remain off limits.

Nebraska's November firearm deer season runs nine days, from November 14 to 22, 2026, starting on the Saturday closest to November 13. Archery and muzzleloader seasons run longer, and late antlerless seasons follow in some units. Permits are sold by deer management unit.
